What is a biometric gun safe?Though the term "biometric safe" is typically used to refer to a safe with a fingerprint scanning lock, it also applies to a much broader application than that.
The field of biometrics also applies to utilizing other uniquely recognizable physical traits as well. Therefore, a biometric safe could also employ DNA, iris scanning, face recognition, and voice recognition amongst others. Though the other types of biometric recognition locking mechanisms are used today, the fingerprint scanning method is the most widely used due to it's reliability and cost effective production.
What kinds of models of biometric fingerprint safes are there? As with traditional locks and safes, there are a wide variety of biometric locking mechanisms available that are used with gun safes. The most common mechanism is a single digit (finger) scanner mounted on the front or top of the safe. The most commonly used finger is of course the thumb, but you can use other fingers if you like. Some of the more advanced biometric gun safes require you to place your entire hand onto the sensor. The biometric sensor than reads the fingerprints of 4 fingers before giving you access to the safe. These "advanced" gun safes have been scrutinized by some however, because a single biometric scanned digit is already a very secure safety measure.
How does a biometric gun safe work? The biometric safe works by first, inserting the authorized personnel's fingerprints (or other biometric features) into the scanning device for positive recognition. Gun safes may offer the ability to authorize one individual, or multiple individuals depending on the model.
Once the fingerprint is recognized and stored, the authorized user may lock lock the gun safe, unlock the gun safe, and in some cases, add and subtract other users so that they may access the contents of the biometric gun safe.
Is a biometric gun safe the safest way to store guns?Though the fingerprint scanner on biometric gun safes is a technological marvel and an extremely safe locking mechanism, it never hurts to use some old world safe know how. We are of course talking about recessed and hidden safes. Just as computer programmers hide the access doorway to websites from hackers, many gun enthusiasts simply hide their safes in hard to find areas. Even with the biometric technology, if a save is hidden well enough that the thief will never find it, you'll increase the chances of retaining your safe's contents.
